Celebrate Juneteenth in the Richmond Region

Juneteenth in the Richmond Region is more than a celebration; it’s a powerful expression of Black freedom, culture, resilience and joy. Also known as “Freedom Day,” Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas finally learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. That history carries deep meaning in Richmond, a city once central to the domestic slave trade and now home to some of the nation’s most important Black historical and cultural landmarks. From the historic streets of Jackson Ward and Shockoe Bottom to celebrations in Henrico, Chesterfield, Hanover and beyond, the Richmond Region offers countless ways to reflect, reconnect, and celebrate. Plan your trip and mark your calendars for these upcoming regional events.
