Tell us a little about yourself.

I'm the Program Coordinator for the Powhatan Fairgrounds in Powhatan, VA. The Fairgrounds is the best kept secret in Powhatan, and the Home of the Powhatan County Fair. I’m actively involved in the community, always volunteering to help those in need. When I’m not volunteering, I enjoy spending time with my family & friends, horseback riding, archery, and wrestling. Whether I’m volunteering or enjoying other hobbies, I always make my honey tag along, even when he doesn't want to. That’s what married folks do!

Describe Richmond in 3 words.
Lively—something’s always going on
Picturesque—
Richmond skyline, parks, museums
Economical—we’ve got both affordable activities and affordable housing.

From sun up to sun down, what’s your ideal day in RVA?
I'm low-key and like to sleep in, so I’d throw on jeans and T-shirt and head to a museum around noon—the Black History Museum & Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) are my favorites—and then have brunch. Afterwards, I'm ready for something to make me laugh, so I usually go see a movie or play, and then I’ll end the evening with dinner with a few friends. Family Secrets is always a go-to for a great meal.

What would you say is Richmond’s best kept secret?
Richmond has so many places to visit, from the upscale shops to family-friendly parks, quaint restaurants, and everything in between. I love the local consignment shops, where you can always find tons of really nice things.

BLK RVA is all about supporting the thriving Black businesses and culture in the Richmond region and encouraging tourists to do the same. What’s one thing every visitor MUST do or see when they come to our region?
It’s hard to name just one; Richmond has so many things to offer. Every visitor must tour the historical sites, including the Black History Museum, the new Arthur Ashe Boulevard, and the VMFA’s African Art exhibit.

You’re from Powhatan. What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re staying close to home?
In the Spring, a must is Annual Powhatan County Fair, held the 3rd weekend in May. It showcases Powhatan’s unique charm and culture and celebrates it in the form of carnival, competition, and family fun for everyone!  For the Fall, it’s the Annual Harvest Fest and Trunk-o-Treat on October 31, which is a benefit for Sickle Cell blood disorder. I love Halloween, and this event has it all—hay rides, a haunted house, live music, and a bonfire. It really is fun for all ages. For a more historical experience, I walk along the Civil War Trail, which has historical information about Black churches, Black soldiers, and really tells a powerful story about how the Black experience began in this town.

When we say the name BLK RVA, what does that mean to you?
To me, BLK RVA means that Richmond recognizes and encourages the celebration of cultural differences.  Our individual and collective connections are enriched when we create spaces for all to celebrate ancestral traditions and create new ones in the Melting Pot that is America. It’s unrealistic to expect complete assimilation; in America, every culture should be celebrated and remembered.
